Poephila (Taeniopygia) Bichenovii

Beasties Babies

Bicheno Finch: Common names Owl finch, Double Barred Finch. A diminutive delightful gregarious bird, one of many Australian grass finches in the Estrildid family. Overall size is approximately 4 inches and there are two recognised two sub species, Poephila b. bichenovii which is the nominate and P.b. annulosa which is the black rumped variety. Found in groups numbering 4 to 20 birds in the wild, these friendly birds will happily collect into a family type group once settled. Quite a free breeding bird once dietary needs are met and will rear successive clutches of young if given the chance. One pair here this year has produced ten chicks and would happily have had many many more if not rested for the autumn.Update coming soon, Monday, March 7, 2005 3:28 AM

This guy (about 2 years old now) has his own family, 3rd generation "beasties" (after their patriarch who rarely for here; has a name - "The Beastie"), and these are thinking about their own family now! They will of course have to wait until they have unrelated mates though.

Young hungry cock coming for a feed from my dad, they love mealworms!

Medium sized hen, it's an egg!
